The fear of flying is known by more then one name. The most common names are:
Aviophobia, Aviatophobia, Aerophobia, and Pteromerhanophobia.

Aviophobia- A unwarranted automatic fear response to the thought or the reality of air travel. Also defined as the fear of flying.
The fear of flying is a very common phobia or fear among people in all walks of live and among all ages. Childrens phobias for fear of flying are very real. This is something that anyone can have or even develop many different ways or for different reasons. Each and every case of flying fear may be caused by a different reasons. It can even be caused by other fears or phobias such as:
1. Claustrophobia- fear of closed spaces.
2. Acrophobia- fear of heights
3. Agoraphobia- fear of having panic attacks in certain places, where escape would be difficult or embarrassing.
In the case of claustrophobia and a fear of flying people may get scared from being shut up in a plane where they cannot just get up and walk out if they choose to do so. They have to stay on the plane until it arrives at a specific destination. This can cause the person to feel very closed in among the other passengers.
With the acrophobia the person may get scared when the plane starts to go up into the air. Because when the plane starts to go up you can feel the pressure in the air of the plane and start to become overwhelmed with anxiety from not being in control of your surroundings.
In the case of agoraphobia people fear that they may become to panicked while on the plane and have no where to go that they won’t be look at or judged by their actions. If the person has an attack it may become very embarrassing for themselves and others.
This fear or phobia is not only a problem for adults it is also a problem for children as well. Childrens phobias and a fear of flying may be for the same reasons as adult or they may be relating other aspects of their lives to flying causing it to be fearful for them. One cause of fear for children could be the reason they have to fly from one place to another like visitation between divorced parents. A child could develop feelings of helplessness or abandonment.
As with children the fear of flying for adults may also be related to incidents that have happened before during or even after a flight they have had before. They may have had a illness or a fight with someone before or after a flight in the past or had been on a flight that had a lot of turbulence before that caused then to be scared.
