Everyone has anxiety of some kind whether it is test taking, crowded places or going outside. Some have worse anxiety than others but in general anxiety is very common and treatable. There are many forms of anxiety and many degrees.
Anxiety in its most general form is simply exaggerated worry. Many times we only flame the fire by over thinking the small things until they become mountains.
One of the first things we should do when we feel our anxiety rising is to stop and breath. Count to ten or backwards from ten very slowly while breathing deeply. Tell yourself that you will be fine and why you will be fine.
If you have been stressing over a test or project due for work simply remind yourself of the steps you have taken and why you are prepared. This alone will calm you more often than not.
There are many symptoms common with flying anxiety or really all anxiety in general. Irritability, tension, excessive worry, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.
Many times we are having an anxiety episode and do not even realize it.
How many times have you been setting at your desk doing work and all of a sudden you have a massive headache and all of a sudden you feel over burdened by a project that a few minutes ago you were perfectly fine with?
Many of believe that something is wrong with us because of the anxiety we have. But anxiety is more much more common than you may think. The simplest form of anxiety disorder which is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) affects over 4 million Americans.
There are many causes for anxiety. Some of these causes are genetic meaning it is our genes or passed down from family members. If other family members have anxiety you are more like to develop it as well. Another cause of anxiety is brain chemistry.
If our brain has too much of one chemical or not enough of another it will cause anxiety or other types of disorders. Environmental factors also play a huge part in anxiety. Those you have suffered traumatic events such as divorce, abuse, change in surroundings or death of a loved one are also at a huge risk for developing anxiety.
The fear of flying is one that we hear about constantly, especially since 9/11. Even those who have flown a hundred times now have anxiety over flying because of one tragic event. Many times our anxiety is caused by things out of control that don’t even affect us personally such as the 9/11 hijacking. This does not make it any less real nor does it make us any less “normal”.
These days it is probably more uncommon to not have anxiety than it is to have. So if you are one of the millions of us who have anxiety do not think of yourself as alone or different because you are far from it and probably even know several people who have similar anxieties.
