Flying claustrophobia is commonly related to the fear of flying. It is estimated that out of all the people who are afraid of flying and avoid taking a plane as a way of transportation 35% of these people have claustrophobia.
One of their biggest fears is the fact that the plane is small and closed in. Once they get in their seats and the door is getting ready to be locked they tend to start feeling all closed in to one space. They cannot control the situation because they can’t get out, they have to wait for the flight to end.
Sometimes a claustrophobic can take an airplane flight if it is a short flight maybe less than an hour or so. Because they know it will only be a short time until they are able to exit the plane where they will be in complete control of their surroundings and actions once again. This allows them to feel more at ease for a short flight.
When a claustrophobic is afraid of taking a flight on an airplane it is possible that their fear really has nothing to with the plane at all. The fear is usually more to do with the control or actually the lack of control they will have once the doors to the plane shut and the plane takes off towards its destination. Their condition is to do with being in a enclosed or small place they cannot get out of any time they choose. They may have an increased intensity of their fears as the flight last for a longer period of time.
Usually if a person is claustrophobic they will think ahead and book an isle seat for their flight. They may even try to book a seat where the other seats in their row are not booked. That way they may be able to feel less crowded during the flight. If they feel like their air is running out they can turn on the vent fan above their head to give them fresh cool air allowing them to feel a little less closed in.
In some cases simple things can increase the fears of a claustrophobic. Just having other passengers walking by them or hearing or seeing the other passengers open and close the window shades can be very upsetting.
Even when the flight draws to an end they may start to feel an accomplishment towards making it through the flight but then the fear may start to increase when the plane gets ready to land. They may fear that the plane could be delayed and have to taxi for a while to wait its turn to land or the plane may take a long time to get to the docking gate. Once the plane stops and the doors open they may still be full of fear because they will have to wait their turn to exit the plane to freedom.
