There have been many discussions whether or not it is safe for a pregnant woman to fly. Some think that flying during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, early labor, or other harm to your unborn baby.

Though rest assured; most women who are experiencing a healthy pregnancy are allowed to fly whenever they want so long as they fly before the 36th week of gestation.

But there are a few problems that might prevent a pregnant woman from flying.

Those who should not fly during their pregnancy might be suffering from such problems as sickle cell anemia, placental abnormalities, hypertension, or who could be at risk for premature labor.

Doctors do not suggest that women with these who are at high risk to immediately jump on the plane for their next destination.

Below are some things you should do before you board the plane for your next trip.

If you are in your first or third trimester, talk with your doctor about your travel plans first. This will ensure you that you have the green light to board the plane to your next destination.
Call the airlines before you book your flight for their regulations on pregnancy and flying; every airline carrier has different policies on flying during your pregnancy. This will also determine which carrier you will be booking your tickets through. Some require that you bring a doctor’s note stating that it is ok for you to travel by air.
With the ok from both your doctor and the airline there are many things that you should do in order to ensure a more comfortable adventure in the air. These things will help you enjoy your flight in comfort and to ensure that you do not risk any injury to yourself of your unborn.

These tips listed below are to make sure your flight is enjoyable.

  1. Make sure you drink plenty of water during your flight; this is to make sure that you stay hydrated and to prevent you from retaining water due to not having enough go through your system. This tip should not only be for flights only but a precaution for anytime during the pregnancy.
  2. When you fasten your safety belt, make sure that you are placing the belt across your thighs not around your belly; this is to make things a bit comfortable for you and will also protect you if there are any issues during takeoff and landing of the plane.
  3. Get an aisle seat; for those moments that you have to use the bathroom as many pregnant women do, this will make it a lot easier to get up and down to satisfy the urges to relieve yourself.
  4. Get up every half- hour and walk up and down the aisle during your flight; this will keep the blood circulating and the flow normal. Pregnant women produce more blood to support the fetus so it is important to keep it circulating normally.

Overall, flying during pregnancy is perfectly safe when using these tips and precautions. As long as everything is good to go its smooth sailing.
